AECP – Creative Watercolor Media

I am so excited that I passed my Level 1 Challenge and I have moved onto Level 2 for my certification. Level 2 has 10 additional classes and another challenge. The first class I concentrated on is Creative Watercolor Media.  The class provided so much inspiration and challenged me to try a much more organic approach to watercolor techniques.  This was actually such a simple card to make but is so striking!

  1. To begin I brushed clean water over an entire sheet of 9”x12” Canson XL Watercolor cold press 140# paper.
  2. I then loaded my paint brush up with water and randomly brushed and dabbed Altenew Artist Watercolors (24 pan set) in Tea Party, Fiery Sunset, Summer Afternoon and Pocketful of Sunshine onto the paper.
  3. Note I allowed the paint to trickle down the page for added interest.
  4. I then used my heat gun to dry the paint and repeated adding water and watercolors onto the page to increase the intensity of the colors and dried again.
  5. Next I cut my watercolor paper down into a 3.75”x5” panel.  I saved the remaining watercolor paper to use on a future card.
  6. I inked up Altenew’s Fresh Cut Roses stamp with Versa Fine Embossing Ink and stamped the design twice to get good coverage on the watercolor paper.
  7. Altenew Pewter Embossing Powder was applied to the card panel and heat embossed.  I used an anti static bag to prep the panel after drying with the heat gun.
  8. I decided to add a little more depth to the flower by adding additional watercolors for shading with a paint brush and let that dry.
  9. Next I glued the watercolor panel to 4”x5.25” grey cardstock panel and then mounted the panel to an A2 card base with foam tape (A2 = Neenah 110 lb – 4.25 x 11″ that was scored and folded in half).
  10. To complete the card I stamped the Congratulations sentiment from the same stamp set onto gray cardstock with Altenew Obsidian Pigment Ink and attached it with foam adhesive.

This was such a fun card to make and allowed me to use a new technique and not be worried about precise painting.  As always, I hope you will give this technique a try and I hope my blog will provide inspiration to you and spark excitement and joy in your life and those  you create for.

Until next time…Happy Crafting!!

  1. What a beautiful card! I have a similar tutorial coming up next month. It follows your tutorial up to step 7 and then it is different 🙂 The colours that you have used look beautiful as well!
Thank you for submitting your work to the AECP assignment gallery.
